Athletic career

Gerti Schanderl was the daughter of a locksmith for the Federal Railroad and an assembly line tailor. She started for EC Munich , her trainer was Rosemarie Brüning . In 1972 she won her first German championship title, but Isabel de Navarre took part in the Olympic Games in Sapporo . Schanderl also won the championship title in 1973 and 1974 before de Navarre and was also the best-placed runner from the Federal Republic of Germany at the European championships. After she was fifth in the European Championship in 1973, she improved by one place to fourth in 1974. The fourth place at the World Championships in front of a home crowd was the runner's greatest success. In 1975 Schanderl lost for the first time in the German championship against Isabel de Navarre, who was sixth in the World Cup, also ahead of Schanderl internationally. In 1976 Schanderl was able to win the German championship, but at the European championship in Geneva, Isabel de Navarre placed fourth, clearly ahead of Gerti Schanderl, who only came in ninth. Then de Navarre was allowed to take part in the Olympic Games in Innsbruck , while Schanderl, in her disappointment, publicly considered switching to speed skating. She didn't do that, but she switched from her long-time coach Rosemarie Brüning to Manfred Schnelldorfer . However, since Schanderl suffered from various injuries and had to undergo multiple operations, she was only able to complete the full training program for three months. After losing to Dagmar Lurz in the German championship in 1977 , Schanderl ended her amateur career and tried her hand at the pros for a while from 1978. Today she works as a trainer and runs the EissportWelt in Munich.
