The Integrated Comprehensive School Mannheim-Herzogenried ( IGMH ) is a comprehensive and a full-day school . It was founded in 1973 in the Herzogenried settlement in Mannheim and is one of the three integrated comprehensive schools in Baden-Württemberg .

particularities

In Baden-Württemberg , after an initial six comprehensive school attempts, there are only three comprehensive schools that are enshrined in the School Act as schools of a special kind : the Staudinger Comprehensive School Freiburg im Breisgau , the International Comprehensive School Heidelberg and the Integrated Comprehensive School Mannheim-Herzogenried. With the eight-year high school introduced in 2004 , the orientation level in Baden-Württemberg has been canceled. In this respect, the IGMH is special in two respects: It has a three-year orientation phase and continues to lead the students to the Abitur in nine years .

The IGMH has also been a full-day school since it was founded in 1973 and thus has more than thirty years of experience in all-day operations. This is not simply a matter of extending the morning beyond lunch. The all-day concept is based on a holistic pedagogical understanding of school-based education and learning.

The IGMH is a partner school of the Rhine-Neckar Olympic Training Center . The IGMH has been an elite sports school since 2014 .

School structure

In the IGMH, the three mainstream schools, Werkrealschule , Realschule and Gymnasium, are closely related in terms of organization in the orientation level from 5th to 7th grade and initially do not appear.

Accordingly, after completing primary school, the IGMH accepts students who receive a recommendation from the primary school

  • to attend high school
  • to attend secondary school
  • to visit the Werkrealschule

For each of these recommendations, the IGMH offers a corresponding course of education with the same qualifications as can be obtained at regular schools

In the 5th school year, the children are initially taught together - as they are used to from elementary school .

Soon, however, different talents and still different learning habits show up. For this reason , level courses are gradually being created in the core subjects of German , English and mathematics , with the A course corresponding to the requirements of the grammar school, the B course those of the Realschule and the C course those of the Hauptschule.

A system of additional remedial instruction in these three subjects enables the children to prove themselves at their level of ability during the first three years of comprehensive school from grades 5 to 7. Other children can gradually be brought to their individual level of performance by carefully switching from one level to another.

This remedial lesson, in which basic teaching content is repeated and processed, takes place in small groups and without additional pressure to perform, because there is no grading here.

This flexible system of differentiation and support avoids overstraining and understraining. A helping hand can be given to fluctuations in performance without having to change schools.

All students already know the subject of English from elementary school and continue this in the 5th grade. Due to their talent, they can choose the subjects French or Latin or the KTS (Culture - Technology - Sport) subject in the 6th grade . From 7th grade comes in all subject Arbeitslehre added. This subject is initially taught tertiary in home economics , economics and technology , and one of these subjects can later be chosen as a specialty. Up to the end of the 10th grade, all students are taught at least two hours per week in the subject of work studies.

At the beginning of the 8th school year, after three years of precise observation of performance behavior and after targeted support, school-type-related classes are formed that lead to the same qualifications as the regular schools.

Structure of the comprehensive school

As a special feature of the Gymnasium course of education, from grade 8 onwards, the education plan is taught shifted by one year, i. H. In grade 8, content from Gym 7 is implemented, etc. In addition, there is the possibility for Realschule students with French as a second foreign language to be able to enter Gymnasium grade 11 without changing schools after grade 10 if the relevant requirements are met.

foreign languages

About the differentiation in the core subjects German. English and mathematics are also differentiated at the beginning of O2, due to the need for a second foreign language for students who are aiming for the Abitur as an educational goal: French and Latin are available. Not all students choose the second foreign language. After a thorough check, an allocation will be made in agreement with the parents' wishes. Pupils who do not take the second foreign language are given special support in the newly created and conceived subject “Culture and Technology”, a 4-hour “combined subject” with various elements that provides qualifications with other focuses instead of the second foreign language.

Latin is only considered for those students who can be expected to take the path to high school. French, on the other hand, is also a possible profile subject in the Realschule program. That is why Latin and French in O2 differ in their level of difficulty, Latin uses a grammar school textbook, French an integrated comprehensive school textbook.

The second foreign language begins in O2 (6th grade). From O3 onwards, students with a second foreign language attend the transfer-relevant subject of work apprenticeships for two hours per week, for students without a second foreign language it is offered for four hours.

After O3, the integration ends and the pupils are grouped together in regular school-related classes with different profile offers according to their talent focus and their performance.

Upper secondary school

As at other high schools in Baden-Württemberg, the central Abitur examination is also taken at the IGMH, but only in the 13th grade. The IGMH offers the possibility of the “G9”, the nine-year high school education. In addition to the usual subjects, the specialty subject economics (four hours) is offered. In the 2004/2005 school year, the IGMH was one of 30 pilot schools nationwide that prepared and approved the Abitur examination in this subject. A preparatory course integrated into the four-hour Latin course prepares you for the Latinum exam. Seminar courses are offered on topics such as freedom, globalization, business mathematics and happiness and deepen skills and abilities in project planning and presentation. Computer science, philosophy and psychology are regularly offered as electives. The study trip in the 12th grade traditionally leads to foreign cultural metropolises.

Registration and admission numbers

The number of registrations is currently over 400. As a comprehensive school, the IGMH is particularly interesting for those students who are aiming for a higher degree than the one predicted in the primary school recommendation. With the introduction of the G8, the influx of children with high school recommendations also increased. Ultimately, however, there are many reasons for registering. The advancement-oriented philosophy of the IGMH in addition to the individual support - especially from low levels of achievement - influences the decision in many parents. The number of students admitted has fluctuated around an average of around 230 for many years. The students bring recommendations for all three types of school - Hauptschule (until 2009), Realschule and Gymnasium.
