The International Comprehensive School Heidelberg ( IGH for short , full name in accordance with the establishment decree International Comprehensive School - Heidelberg-Hasenleiser - A Peace School ) is a full-day school in the Rohrbach district of Heidelberg . The city of Heidelberg is responsible for the model school . According to the school law of the state of Baden-Württemberg , the IGH is a "school of a special kind". Around 1800 pupils are taught by 160 teachers at the IGH. This makes the IGH the largest school in Heidelberg .

history

International Comprehensive School Heidelberg Secondary and primary level

On the site of today's International Comprehensive School Heidelberg, the Hasenleiser elementary school first opened its doors on September 1, 1971 - the pre-school followed the following year. A municipal council resolution of July 15, 1971 clarified the special status that the IGH was to assume:

"The establishment of the pre-school and elementary school is applied for with the stipulation that this school can be integrated into the model comprehensive school if this is provided for by the concept developed by the planning group."

This planning group was founded in 1974 by the then Minister of Culture of Baden-Württemberg, Wilhelm Hahn , in the form of a commission. In addition to representatives of the city of Heidelberg, this also included scientists and educators as well as representatives of the parents and the education and science union . E. Römischs chaired this commission . The focus of the founding phase, not least supported by Hermann Röhrs , was the idea of peace. When the foundation stone was laid on October 4, 1974, Röhr's writing ( Education for Peace. Stuttgart, Berlin, Cologne, Mainz 1971) was built into the foundation of the school. Hermann Röhrs describes the idea of peace behind the IGH as follows: "In the conviction that peace education and international understanding represent urgent educational goals in a time of armament and permanent armed conflicts, the Heidelberg International Comprehensive School was decided as the peace school of the state of Baden-Württemberg." The IGH was officially opened in the spring of 1976. The IGH's idea of peace was promoted further from 1993, when Beate Weber, a former IGH teacher, took over the office of Mayor of Heidelberg.

The Heidelberg City Archives have been housed in the building complex of the comprehensive school since 2013.

particularities

The level system - "A special kind of school"

Entrance to primary level of the International Comprehensive School Heidelberg

The International Comprehensive School Heidelberg is a full-day school (lessons take place between 7.45 a.m. and 4.00 p.m., with one free afternoon per week), which is a “special kind of school” according to the Baden-Württemberg School Act . In the School Act Section 107 it says:

The Staudinger Comprehensive School Freiburg im Breisgau, the international Comprehensive School in Heidelberg and the Integrated Comprehensive School Mannheim-Herzogenried can be run as a special type of school in grades 5 to 10 without being divided into school types. The lessons can take place in classes and courses that are formed according to the ability of the students. After grade 9, the schools lead to the secondary school leaving certificate and after grade 10 to the secondary school leaving certificate or entitlement to transition to the upper level of the grammar school.

Specifically, the IGH has implemented these requirements in a tiered system. The IGH is divided into three levels:

  • The primary level from grades 1 to 4.
  • The lower secondary level, consisting of a so-called orientation level (grades 5 and 6 in which all pupils of the different school types are taught together) and the intermediate level (secondary school grades 7 to 9 as well as the Realschule and Gymnasium from grades 7 to 10)
  • The upper secondary level, the so-called upper secondary level from grades 11 to 12

internationality

At the International Comprehensive School Heidelberg, pupils from around 60 nations are taught. The integration of foreign students takes place in preparatory classes in which the German language is learned. At the same time, the students in these preparatory classes are taught in German accompanying classes in order to facilitate full integration later. For pupils who leave the preparatory classes, there is also the option of attending “German as a Second Language” lessons.

Peace school

The idea of peace as the intellectual framework of the IGH was added to the school by Röhrs in the founding phase of the school. The idea of peace implies that

“[...] according to the pedagogical intention, education for peace should be perceived in all subjects and at all school levels, but primarily in social studies and history. In addition, the conflict situations occurring in the international grouping of everyday school life are to be used didactically in order to make understanding and willingness to compromise understandable as the basic elements of living together in a democracy . "

The IGH has also been a "recognized school" of the worldwide network of " UNESCO project schools" since 2001 . As such, it undertakes to actively support the aim of UNESCO - education for international understanding and cooperation - in all its school and extracurricular areas.

Eco-audit school

In 1999 the IGH set up an environmental management system based on the Eco-Audit Regulation (today: Eco Management and Audit Scheme ) of the European Union (then: European Community). This eco-audit emblem, which is recognized throughout Europe, was obtained through a voluntary environmental company inspection. In order to be recognized as an eco-audit school, experts check the school every three years for various levels of consumption (water, electricity, paper, ...), amounts of waste or the greening of the site. The environment issue is also explicitly included in the school system. In addition to the two class representatives, two so-called environmental speakers are elected in the IGH classes, who can attend weekly environmental meetings in the school. The students develop various environmental projects within the school, for example a recycling project for old cell phones and batteries.

In addition, there has been an "E-Team" since 1995, in which volunteer, co-operating students are made aware of how to deal with the environment (waste separation, energy consumption, etc.). The team also checks the school's classrooms for their energy consumption throughout the school year. The classes with the lowest energy consumption win money for the class fund in the annual competitions, with the best class winning a day off school.

Dalton School

Since the end of 2015 the so-called " Dalton pedagogy " has been integrated into the IGH school system. This pedagogy is based on the principles of "freedom", "independence" and "cooperation". As part of the Dalton concept of the school, the students have 6 lessons per week in which they can go to a teacher of their choice, which are distributed in different rooms and in which they can decide for themselves which subjects or which tasks they want from want the teachers to regularly complete the newly created learning plan. However, all tasks have to be completed within a larger time frame. It is also up to them whether the students want to work alone, together with other students or in a "room of silence".
