Jürgen Kühnel

Jürgen Kühnel (born May 6, 1944 in Göppingen ; † March 27, 2018 ) was a literary and theater scholar , medievalist and comparativeist .

Life

He completed his studies in German , Indo-European , history and political science at the Universities of Tübingen and Stuttgart and studied acting with Lilo Barth-van Buren in Stuttgart in 1977 with a doctorate at the University of Stuttgart . From 1977 to 2009 he taught literature , theater and film studies at the University of Siegen .

He has authored numerous publications on the history of German and European literature in the Middle Ages, on the history of mediaeval reception in literature and music of the 19th and 20th centuries, and on the history of European theater and music theater. In particular, his work on Richard Wagner and opera on television, comparative literary and theater history as well as film and film analysis should be emphasized. He participated in the organization of a large number of scientific conferences and was one of the founders and organizers of the Salzburg Symposia, which scientifically accompanied the Salzburg Festival from 1989 to 2008 . In 1979 he founded the StudioBühne at the University of Siegen; there he had created more than 30 productions of classical and contemporary pieces by 2008, including several world premieres.
