Private

From 2008 to 2014 Kostner was in a relationship with the former South Tyrolean athlete Alex Schwazer . Her father Erwin is a former professional ice hockey player. Her younger brother Simon (* 1990) plays in the Italian national ice hockey team.

Career

In 2003 she took fourth place in her first appearance at a European Championship with a strong freestyle program in which she showed two triple / triple combinations, among other things. On March 19, 2005, she won the bronze medal at the Figure Skating World Championships in Moscow . Carolina Kostner was the flag bearer for the host country Italy at the opening ceremony for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . Due to a fall in the short program , she only reached ninth place in these games. On January 27, 2007 she became European champion at the European Figure Skating Championships in Warsaw . She successfully defended this title at the European Figure Skating Championships in Zagreb in 2008 .

At the 2008 World Championships in Gothenburg , Sweden , Kostner led after the short program, but had to admit defeat to Japanese Mao Asada after her freestyle performance and won silver. She trained with Michael Huth in Oberstdorf ( Germany ) until March 2009 and moved to Frank Carroll and Christa Fassi in the USA for the 2009/2010 Olympic season . At the 2010 European Championships in Tallinn , she managed to win the gold medal again. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , however, she disappointed with a free fall, with which she fell back to seventh place in the short program to 16th place in the final ranking. After the 2009/10 season she went back to Oberstdorf to see her long-time coach Michael Huth. With him she got back on the road to success. With a victory at the NHK Trophy in Japan and a third place at Skate America in Portland, she qualified for the Grand Prix final in Beijing despite knee problems.

At the 2011 World Championships , which were relocated from Nagano to Moscow due to a severe earthquake in Japan , she was able to improve from sixth to bronze thanks to her best freestyle performance to date.

2011/12

The 2011/12 season was Kostner's most successful so far. After two third places and one second place she was able to win the ISU Grand Prix final for the first time . With a victory in the Cup of China and a second place in the Trophée Eric Bompard , she qualified as the third-best runner. Kostner did not take part in the Italian championships for the second time since 2003, but was able to become European champion for the fourth time. At the 2012 World Championships , Kostner was able to win for the first time in her tenth participation. Kostner was third after the short program, but was able to prevail with a flawless freestyle. This enabled Kostner to improve her personal best in the freestyle and overall.

2014

Bronze at the 2014 Olympics

At the European Championships in Budapest she was unable to defend her title last year and came third behind the two young Russian women Julija Lipnizkaja and Adelina Sotnikowa . At the 2014 Olympic Games , Kostner started both in the women's singles and with the team. In the individual, she fought for the precious metal she had hoped for for the first time in her third Olympic participation. She finished third and had to admit defeat to Olympic champion Adelina Sotnikowa and runner-up Kim Yuna . She was even able to set a new personal best with her performance. In the team competition a 4th place was achieved behind Russia , Canada and the USA . At the world championships she reached third place again. It was her sixth medal at world championships, the fourth in a row. In the same year she took third place at the European Championships, Olympic Games and World Championships.

Ban 2015

On January 16, 2015, Kostner was suspended by the anti-doping court of the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (CONI) for a period of 16 months until May 16, 2016. The background to the decision was that, according to the court, she had obstructed the doping investigation against her former friend Alex Schwazer and knew about his doping. The decision was astonishing in ice-skating circles, the pirouette spoke of kin liability . Kostner lodged a complaint with the International Sports Court, as did the CONI, which called for the suspension to be extended to two years. The sports court extended the ban to 21 months, but dated the start of the ban back to April 1, 2014, so that Kostner has been eligible to start again since the beginning of 2016. Three of Kostner's shows in August 2015 were not classified as a violation of the ban.

Kostner's first competition after the suspension expired was the "Medal Winners Open" in January 2016 in Osaka, where she came second.
