Christine Stüber-Errath , b. Errath , at times Trettin-Errath (born December 29, 1956 in East Berlin ) is a former German figure skater who started in a single run for the GDR . She is the world champion of 1974 and the European Championships of 1973 , 1974 and 1975 . Errath trained with Inge Wischnewski at SC Dynamo Berlin . She was discovered by her trainer while roller skating in Berlin's Friedrichshain .

After her career as a figure skater, she worked as a presenter and author .

Live and act

She first appeared in 1969 when she was third in the GDR championships behind Gaby Seyfert and Sonja Morgenstern , a result that was repeated the following year. In 1969 she also played her first European Championship , then in 1971 her first World Championship and in 1972 her first Olympic Games . Until 1973, her constant rival in the GDR was Sonja Morgenstern, who was trained by Jutta Müller . Errath could never defeat them at the national level. Errath was considered to be particularly strong, so the rule change of 1972, through which the devaluation of the duty took place and the short program was introduced, was very helpful. Errath experienced her international breakthrough in 1973. At the 1973 European Championships in Cologne , she was European champion ahead of the British Jean Scott and the Swiss Karin Iten . At the World Championships in Bratislava , she won the bronze medal behind the Canadian Karen Magnussen and the American Janet Lynn .

In 1974 Errath became champion of the GDR for the first time . In Zagreb she defended her European championship title and celebrated her greatest success by winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Munich , ahead of the American Dorothy Hamill and the Dutch Dianne de Leeuw . After Gaby Seyfert, she was the second world champion from the GDR. In 1975 Errath defended her national title and became European champion in Copenhagen for the third time in a row, as in the previous year before Dianne de Leeuw. However, she was unable to defend her world championship title in Colorado Springs . It was defeated by de Leeuw and Hamill.

In addition, from 1975 onwards, Anett Pötzsch became a competitor in her own country, who was trained by Jutta Müller.

At the end of 1975 Errath suffered a long and serious foot injury. So she could not take part in the GDR championships in 1976 and was severely impaired throughout the 1976 competition year.

Errath lost the internal duel at the European Championships in Geneva against Pötzsch, who won silver in front of Errath when de Leeuw won. At the Olympic Games in Innsbruck she won the bronze medal behind Hamill and de Leeuw - but ahead of Pötzsch. At the World Championships in Gothenburg Errath was able to defeat both de Leeuw and Pötzsch again. She was runner-up behind Dorothy Hamill.

In 1974 she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in the GDR for her sporting successes .

Errath ended her active figure skating career after the 1976 season, as she saw no chance of increasing performance on an international scale due to her sustained injury.

However, with her resignation, Errath contradicted the wishes of the sporting government of the GDR, which then excluded them from all awards and privileges of the 1976 Olympic medalists.

Christine Errath was married to the GDR tennis champion Ulrich Trettin . The couple have two children, Jenny and Marcus. However, the marriage ended in divorce. In 2006 she married the orthodontist Paul Stüber in Venice and is now called Christine Stüber-Errath.

She studied German language and literature and after her sporting career first worked for GDR children's television in Berlin-Adlershof, for example for the show top fit . Afterwards she hosted the program “ Outsider Leader ” on MDR television together with Hans-Joachim Wolfram . In 2007 she quit television work for personal reasons.

In March 2010 she published the book Die Pirouettenkönigin - Figure skating stories about the Berlin master trainer Inge Wischnewski .

Christine Stüber-Errath in the feature film

Christine Stüber-Errath as herself in the feature film The Beginner
2016 for the movie The Beginner Back on the Ice.

After a long break, the world champion was inspired to return to the ice as a hobby runner and to train again. She developed a freestyle for her first feature film role in the film The Beginner , in which she played herself. At the Berlin Sportforum Hohenschönhausen in front of an audience on the public shooting date, she showed that she is also a professional as a hobby runner.

The first take on Alexandra Sell's feature film debut The Beginner fell on March 2, 2016 in Berlin-Hellersdorf. The film tells a late coming-of-age story: at the age of 58, the doctor Annebärbel Buschhaus put on her skates again after more than forty years. The notorious loner searches for her childhood dreams on the ice - and finds a friend: Jolina Kuhn, Berlin youth champion in figure skating. Through them, she manages to open up and break away from her dominant mother.

The film is a production by the Berliner Lichtblick Media in coproduction with Lichtblick Film, Cine + Filmproduktion, ZDF (Das kleine Fernsehspiel) and ARTE. In 2017 the beginner will first be in the cinema and from 2018 on television.
