The target group of top fit were children between 9 and 10 and 13 years. Current and general topics related to sport formed the content of the program. This was intended to encourage viewers to engage in physical activity. The moderator was Christine Trettin-Errath , who won the world championship title for the GDR at the 1974 World Figure Skating Championships . Various sports were presented by prominent studio guests. Current events relating to sport were presented in the regular top info section . In every program there was also a sporting task for the studio audience.

The cartoon snail Topsy (sometimes also spelled Topsi ) was used for the child-friendly presentation of the content and as a recurring entertainment moment . The figure of the snail was designed by the graphic artist Manfred Bofinger .
