Manfred Bofinger (born October 5, 1941 in Berlin ; † January 8, 2006 there ) was a German graphic artist , caricaturist and cartoonist . He was one of the most important graphic artists in the GDR .
Life
Manfred Bofinger comes from a humble background in Berlin-Mitte. His father was a poster painter, his mother a saleswoman. After finishing school in the Gray Monastery high school, he completed a two-year training course as a typesetter after graduating from high school in 1959. From 1961 until 1968 he worked as a typographer for the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel . Having come to caricature as an autodidact, he has since worked as a freelance graphic artist, cartoonist and book illustrator, still working for Eulenspiegel and regularly for the children's magazine Frösi . He illustrated over 300 books and created picture stories himself, including many for children. He signed his drawings with Bofi .
1963 to 1989 Bofinger was a member of the SED , 1972 to 1989 member of the Association of Journalists of the GDR (VDJ) and 1974 to 1990 of the Association of Visual Artists (VBK). In 1981 he was awarded the GDR Art Prize.
After a brain haemorrhage on December 29, 2004, he was in a vegetative state despite surgery and rehabilitation before he died on January 8, 2006 at the age of 64. Manfred Bofinger lived in Berlin, Alt-Treptow, until his death. He left behind his wife Gabriele and four children. His grave is in the Stralau cemetery and is artistically designed with a white marble figure of a reading child.
