FRÖSI is the name of a children's magazine that was published in the GDR by the Junge Welt publishing house. It was the magazine for members of the pioneer organization Ernst Thälmann .

Explanation of the name

The name "FRÖSI" is derived from the opening line of a pioneering song by Hans Naumilkat (to be happy and sing ). To be happy and sing was initially the full title, from 1965 the short form was introduced.

Chronicle and contents up to 1990

The first edition of FRÖSI appeared on June 25, 1953, with a greeting from the then FDJ Chairman Erich Honecker . The 32- to 40-page issue was published monthly from 1956 (before that every six weeks), the maximum circulation was around 600,000. The selling price was 70  pfennigs .

In addition to propaganda comics (such as We build a tank in issue 9/1957), calls for the collection of secondary raw materials , herbs and berries (through the cartoon figure Korbine Früchtchen ) and principles of hygiene and health prophylaxis (cartoon figure Kundi ), the picture stories Ali and Archibald appeared and Käpt'n Lütt by Horst Alisch , Mäxchen und Tüte by Richard Hambach , the comic Atomino based on an Italian comic by Marcello Argilli and Vinicio Berti and Jürgen Günther's Otto and Alwin . A monthly DIN A4 color print of a classic painting was enclosed as a collective picture. Furthermore, there were craft suggestions, contributions from nature , science and technology in the booklets. Occasionally there were editions with handicraft sheets as supplements, as was often the case in the November edition with a Christmas calendar.

FRÖSI on the way

FRÖSI also organized a rolling FRÖSI disco at school festivals. At press and public festivals there was often a FRÖSI stand with the latest issues.

Development after the fall of the Wall

After being renamed tandem in 1990, the magazine was discontinued in March 1991 when the Junge Welt publishing house was wound up by the Treuhand .

In June 2002 a single issue appeared as a supplement to a weekend edition of New Germany as an attempt to revive FRÖSI as a magazine for children. After several postponements, FRÖSI appeared again from May 2005 - but only in the new federal states  - as a monthly 32-page A4 magazine for children between 8 and 12 years with an initial circulation of 70,000 copies at a price of 2.10 euros. The magazine was discontinued in November 2005. The reasons were a drop in sales and the associated financial difficulties.

Trivia

In the kangaroo chronicles of the Berlin cabaret artist, author, singer and poetry slammer Marc-Uwe Kling , FRÖSI is mentioned on various occasions as a magazine that was read by his fictional roommate, a communist kangaroo, and as "a somewhat more ideologically stable variant of Üps " is presented.

  2. Be happy and sing. GDR children's magazine "Frösi" is reissued. Deutschlandfunk , “ Markt und Medien” series , News section , April 16, 2005; accessed on December 29, 2015 (full text): “The» Frösi «, whose name stands for» Be happy and sing «, was discontinued in 1991. The magazine, founded in 1953, had a circulation of 500,000 copies in its heyday. Bernd Wishöth, the managing director of the newly founded Frösi Verlag in Berlin, would like to reach the generation with an initial print run of 70,000 who grew up with the »Frösi« and who are now looking for challenging reading for their children in the role of parents. ## Our basic tenor is: Promote and challenge. Or ask, ask to participate. So, a magazine, like the Frösi used to do in the past, with a wide range of handicrafts, puzzles that simply encourage occupation at a certain level and that is actually the essential thing that Frösi had in the past and what Frösi should have today. ## The new »Frösi« will only be available at East German kiosks for cost reasons.
