The 100 best posters of the year
The 100 best posters of the year is a German poster competition that was founded in 1966.
history
1966-1979
The competition The best posters of the year was the predecessor organization of today's 100 Best Posters Association and was launched in the GDR in 1966 and organized jointly by the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and the Ministry of Culture . In addition to honoring outstanding work, the promotion of young talent was an important point that played a role in the establishment of the company. The jury met for the first time in the Museum of German History , today's DHM. The first jury comprised 28 members, including Hans Baltzer, Klaus Wittkugel , Werner Klemke and Paul Rosié , as well as representatives of the VBK, the Ministry of Culture, the respective clients and printing companies.
Relevant evaluation points were
- artistic quality
- printing standard and
- promotional component.
From the start, the competition was popular with artists and clients alike. As early as 1966 for the founding event, 360 works were submitted. A comparison of the number of submitted works is only possible from 1970 onwards, as the year of the competition did not correspond to the respective calendar year until then. The sponsors made considerable sums available for the organization and implementation of the competition, but also for prizes and awards. This further increased the attractiveness of the competition.
The best posters were listed from 1966 to 1979 in a statistical overview of the numbers of the magazine “ neue werbung” according to the competition conditions valid during this period. All the posters sent in were exhibited, a changing number were awarded the best posters , and praiseworthy awards were given. The posters were divided into the categories of political works , economic posters , film posters , event and exhibition posters, and posters for social propaganda and sports .

1990-2001
Dedicated poster designers and officials such as the former VBK secretary Dr. It is thanks to Wilfried Karger that the competition had a future even after reunification . In May 1990 the Association of Graphic Designers eV (VGD) was founded, which continued the competition across Germany. The competition now showed a broad cross-section of all German poster work. The jury consisted of poster graphic artists and had to evaluate 306 submissions at their first meeting, which were divided into the categories of social posters , cultural posters and advertising posters . From 1994 to 1999 the Allianz deutscher Designer eV (AGD) took over the publication of the exhibition series. To mark the 30th anniversary of the competition, an exhibition was held in 1996 under the patronage of the Berlin Senator for Culture Peter Radunski . 128 posters from the GDR and the Federal Republic were shown.
Since 2001
In September 2001 the newly founded association 100 Beste Plakate eV took over the organization and direction of the competition. Cooperating professional associations of the association are: graphic design associations of Austria and Switzerland, the Alliance Graphique Internationale , the International Council of Graphic Design Associations , the BDG professional association of German communication designers and the AGD. The founding members included Klaus Staeck , Helmut Brade and Volker Pfüller . In the spirit of the European idea, the competition was expanded to include German-language posters and thus artists from Austria and Switzerland were also integrated.
