Ministry of Culture (GDR)

The Ministry of Culture (MfK) in the GDR was formed in 1954 and dissolved when Germany was reunified in October 1990.

History and jurisdiction

The basis was the decree of the Council of Ministers of January 7, 1954. The Ministry of Culture became the legal successor to the State Commission for Art Affairs, founded in 1951 . It also took on the duties of the Office of Literature and Publishing and the State Committee for Film. Johannes R. Becher was appointed first minister . The Ministry's task was to ensure a uniform cultural policy in the fields of literature, literary policy, publishing, book trade, film, theater, music, applied and visual arts, entertainment and folk art, and events.

The ministry has been restructured several times. The departments HV Publishing and Book Retailing , HV Film , HA Performing Arts, Music and Folk Art , HA Visual Arts and Museums existed.

Directly subordinated were the German State Opera Berlin , the German Theater , the State Circus of the GDR , the State Museums in Dresden and Berlin as well as all artistic universities and technical schools.
