Herbert Schirmer (born July 8, 1945 in Stadtlengsfeld ) is a former German politician. He was Minister for Culture of the GDR in Lothar de Maizière's cabinet .

Life

Schirmer completed an apprenticeship as a machinist and stoker, and later trained as a bookseller. From 1974 to 1975 he was a bookseller in Dresden , then until 1978 employee in the district cabinet for cultural work in Dresden and since 1977 editor-in-chief of the Kultur-Report Dresden. After a correspondence course in journalism at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , he was head of the department at Verlag der Kunst until 1986.

Schirmer joined the Eastern CDU in 1985 . In autumn 1989 he was co-founder and spokesman of the New Forum in Beeskow , from November 1989 to March 1990 chairman of the CDU district association Frankfurt (Oder) and until August 1990 chairman of the CDU regional association Brandenburg . From March to October 1990 Schirmer was a member of the People's Chamber and from April to October, as successor to Dietmar Keller, Minister of Culture.

In February 1991 Schirmer left the CDU and was a member of the SPD from 1992 to 1998 . From 1991 to 1998 he was director of the museum in the Beeskow castle, where he initiated the "Documentation Center for Art in the GDR", and then worked for Inpetho Medienproduktion GmbH in Cottbus . He lives as a journalist in Lieberose and is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New Culture Foundation.
