Political party

Ulrich Junghanns entered the age of 18 in 1974 block party Democratic Farmers' Party of Germany (DBD) a. In 1981 he switched to an employment relationship with the DBD and "made a steep career as a functionary". He was the first secretary of the DBD Greiz and in 1983 was finally appointed political employee on the party executive committee of the DBD. He later became chairman of the DBD district board in Berlin. Junghanns was still defending the wall on July 3, 1989 : "As far as the wall is concerned, we will not allow ourselves to be talked out of its protective function - simply because we feel protection from everything that is rampant behind the wall of brown plague."

In 1990 he became the first deputy chairman of the Democratic Peasant Party in Germany. After the board of directors of the DBD had decided to merge with the CDU on June 25, 1990 and Günther Maleuda withdrew from the chair shortly thereafter, Junghanns became the acting chairman. The merger was therefore decided at an extraordinary party conference in accordance with Section 13 of the Political Parties Act . Even under his chairmanship, the DBD spoke out against the GDR joining the Federal Republic under Article 23 of the Basic Law.

Since 1990 he has been a member of the state board of the CDU Brandenburg. From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the federal executive committee of the CDU. Since January 1999 he was deputy state chairman of the CDU Brandenburg. After the previous CDU state chairman Jörg Schönbohm no longer ran for election at the 2007 state party conference, Junghanns applied for this position. The election, in which he was supported by Schönbohm, Junghanns won just ahead of his opponent Sven Petke with 112 to 110 votes. Dierk Homeyer , the CDU member of the state parliament, proposed by Junghanns as general secretary of the CDU Brandenburg , did not receive the required majority at the state party conference. Shortly thereafter, there was an argument. “I see in your eyes the hatred that shaped this argument,” shouted the new chairman from the podium. After boos from delegates and a crisis meeting of the district chairmen, Junghanns apologized.

After bad results for the CDU in the local elections in Brandenburg on September 28, 2008, Junghanns resigned on October 20, 2008 from his position as state party chairman.

MP

He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1990 to 1998 . In 1990 he won the direct mandate in the constituency of Frankfurt (Oder) - Eisenhüttenstadt - Beeskow and in 1994 he entered parliament via the state list of the CDU Brandenburg.

In 1993 he ran for election as mayor of the city of Frankfurt (Oder). He received 12.5 percent of the vote. From 1994 to 2002 Junghanns was city councilor and chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in Frankfurt (Oder).

From October 2004 to 2009 Junghanns was a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament . He was unable to prevail against Frank Hammer from the PDS in the constituency of Frankfurt (Oder) . Junghanns moved into parliament via the CDU's state list.

Junghanns was no longer a candidate for the party for the 2009 state elections in Brandenburg.
