Jörg Steinbach (born May 28, 1956 in West Berlin ) is a German chemical engineer and politician ( SPD ). From 2010 to the end of March 2014 he was President of the Technical University of Berlin and from July 2014 to September 2018 President of the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg . Since September 19, 2018 he has been Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy for the State of Brandenburg. Since November 2019 he has been Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy in the Woidke III cabinet .

Life

Steinbach studied chemistry from 1975 to 1981 at the Technical University of Berlin, received his doctorate from 1981 to 1985 at the Institute for Technical Chemistry there and qualified as a professor in 1994 ( Venia legendi : Technical Chemistry). He worked for Schering AG from 1985 to 1996 .

Steinbach was appointed professor for systems and safety technology at his alma mater in 1996 . The focus of his specialist area there is the design of plants and plant components as well as the safe handling of substances and mixtures, as well as the identification, assessment and assessment of risks in the process industry and the consideration of human behavior when operating process plants.

Steinbach was the 1st Vice President of the Technical University of Berlin since 2002.

He was a board member of the DECHEMA “Safety Technology” section and a member of the “Technical Committee for Plant Safety” at the Federal Environment Ministry .

Steinbach held leading positions in engineering training organizations. Since 2003 he has been CEO of Uni-assist (work and service center for international student applications). From 2006 to 2007 he was Vice President and from 2007 to 2009 President of the European Society for Engineering Education . Steinbach has been a board member of ASIIN (accreditation agency for engineering, computer science, natural sciences and mathematics) and chairman of the accreditation association for engineering courses in 2013, he received an honorary doctorate from City University London and the National University of Water Management and Nature Resources Use in Rivne ( Ukraine ).

On September 19, 2018, he became Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy of the State of Brandenburg as the successor to the resigned Albrecht Gerber in the Woidke II cabinet . After the state elections in Brandenburg in 2019 , he was sworn in as Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy in the Woidke III cabinet on November 20, 2019 .

He has been a member of the SPD since November 2018.

Jörg Steinbach is married and has three sons.
