Adolf Goering

Adolf Goering (born April 17, 1841 in Lüchow ; † December 5, 1906 in Berlin ) was a German civil engineer . He founded the science of train stations .

Life

Goering received his school education in Liebenburg and Hildesheim am Andreanum . From 1858 he attended the Polytechnic in Hanover . After passing the state examination in hydraulic engineering and railway construction , Goering worked on numerous railway construction projects from 1864, most recently in the central office of the Royal Railway Directorate in Hanover and the Directorate of the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway in Berlin. In June 1871, Goering passed his master builder examination at the Berlin Building Academy . Subsequently he worked for the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Railway until 1876 . He then went on a six-month study trip that took him to the most important railway, road and tunnel construction sites of the time in western Germany , Italy , Austria and Switzerland . Here he was able to examine the Gotthard Railway under construction in detail . He completed his practical work with a brief employment with the Cologne-Mindener Railway .

In 1877 a chair for railway and tunnel construction was established at the Berlin Building Academy . The management was transferred to Adolf Goering, who carried out his teaching post as a lecturer from October 1, 1877, but was appointed professor on April 1, 1878 . In this activity Goering showed himself to be able to develop and convey scientific methods for handling technical tasks. So he developed a uniform system for mass determination, mass distribution and cost determination for earthworks, which as a textbook reached five editions. The outstanding achievement of his academic activities, however, is the creation of a scientific basis for the design of train station systems, which until then had only been carried out according to "tried and tested models".

At the Technical University , to which Goering's chair had moved, he was appointed head of the civil engineering department four times. In 1898/99 he also held the office of rector of the university, appointed by his college of teaching staff. Goering also worked as an expert several times, for example together with August von Borries and Claus Koepcke on the Elberfeld - Barmen rail link , on the basis of which the suspension railway there was built. He was appointed a secret government councilor by the Prussian state .

Adolf Goering died unexpectedly in December 1906 and was buried in Berlin-Westend .
