Walter Pflaum (born January 4, 1896 in Kroschnitz , Meseritz district , † October 1, 1989 in Berlin-Zehlendorf ) was a German professor of mechanical engineering.

Life

After participating in the First World War, from which he returned seriously wounded in 1915, he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Gdansk . He graduated with honors in 1921, gained his first practical experience with diesel engines at the Danzig shipyard and went to the engineering laboratory of TH Danzig as operations manager. After receiving his doctorate on the subject of "Contribution to the measurement of the volume of flowing steam by means of baffles", he worked from 1927 to 1933 in the Reichswehr Ministry in Berlin. During this time, Pflaum completed his habilitation at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg and in 1933 became head of the testing department at MAN Augsburg.

In 1937 he was appointed professor for ship engines at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg . In 1946 he was given the entire field of internal combustion engines and from 1948 to 1950 he was dean of the mechanical engineering faculty. 1950/51 he was rector of the Technical University of Berlin. In 1956 he founded his Institute for Internal Combustion Engines, in which one of the first diesel engines in the world, a gift from MAN, was available to the students. Walter Pflaum retired in 1964, but he retained his teaching post until 1966, when a successor had been found for him.

One focus of his scientific life's work was the supercharged diesel engine, whereby he dealt early with the problems of heavy oil combustion and noise emissions. He has also taken up the gas turbine in teaching and research.

In recognition of his experiences and services, Pflaum was appointed a member of the Science Council of the Federal Republic of Germany, of which he was a member until 1964. On January 8, 1976, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. In 1986, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, he was solemnly appointed honorary senator of the Technical University of Berlin as a further recognition of his achievements.

Pflaum has been a member of the Shipbuilding Society (STG) since 1938 and has given four internationally acclaimed lectures to this society and made important contributions to the discussion. He presented his research results on heavy oil operation and the charging of marine diesel engines. In recognition of this scientific research work in the field of internal combustion engines for ships and the lectures he gave to the Shipbuilding Society, the STG awarded him the Silver Medal in 1968.
