Karl Otto Emil Lampe (born December 23, 1840 in Gollwitz , † September 4, 1918 ) was a German mathematician .

Life

He was born as the son of a village school teacher in Gollwitz (today part of Brandenburg an der Havel ) and attended the secondary school there, which he left with the school leaving certificate in 1859. He studied mathematics in Berlin from 1859 to 1864 and made up his high school diploma in the first year of his studies. He was primarily a student of Weierstrass , Kummer and Steiner . Magnus aroused his interest in physical applications of mathematics.

He received his doctorate in 1864 under Ernst Eduard Kummer and Karl Weierstraß with a thesis on the analytical geometry of space De superficiebus quarti ordinis quibus puneta triplicia insunt .

He has been a very active member of the Berlin Mathematical Society since it was founded .

From 1866 to 1889 he was a senior teacher at the Friedrich-Werdersche Gewerbeschule Berlin, from 1874 to 1911 a teacher at the War Academy , in 1877 he became professor and in 1889 full professor as successor to Paul du Bois-Reymond at the Technical University of Charlottenburg , where he worked from 1892 until 1893 was rector . He is portrayed as an excellent teacher. In 1885 he took over the editing of the yearbook on the progress of mathematics . In 1895 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Because of a severe kidney disease, he looked for relaxation in Bad Pyrmont during the summer vacation . During the return journey to Berlin on September 4, 1918 by train , he died of a heart attack near Braunschweig .

His scholarly estate is in the manuscript department of the Berlin State Library .
