Hans-Jürgen Ewers

Hans-Jürgen Ewers (born May 19, 1942 in Münster; † April 24, 2002 ) was a German economist and President of the Technical University of Berlin .

Life

The professor for economics studied economics at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (1970 doctorate, 1977 habilitation). From 1997 to 2002 he was the President of the TU Berlin. His successor in the office of President, Kurt Kutzler , paid tribute to Ewers with the words “With the power of his thoughts, his tireless commitment, his ability to convince and with his great personal charisma he has served the university and its friends to an extent that probably its full effect will only be evident in the future. ”Ewers wanted to reduce teacher training, humanities and social sciences in favor of the core subjects in engineering and natural sciences. Ewers was of the opinion that the university should be run like a company with a supervisory board. During his tenure, 15 departments - of the former 21 - were merged into eight faculties. He justified austerity measures with the pursuit of excellence. The Technical University was not one of the 9 universities in Germany funded for its future concept in the first round of the Excellence Initiative 2007–2012, nor in the second round of the Excellence Initiative from 2012, in which 11 universities and colleges were funded.

tomb

Ewers died after a long and serious illness at the age of 59 and was buried in the forest cemetery in Zehlendorf .
