Johann Friedrich Bubendey

Johann Friedrich Bubendey (born July 4, 1848 in Hamburg ; † May 10, 1919 there ) was a German hydraulic engineer , university professor and construction clerk.

Life

Johann Friedrich Bubendey attended the Johanneum secondary school in Hamburg. After a year of commercial apprenticeship, he moved in 1867 as a trainee to the 1st section of the building deputation under Johann Hermann Maack. From 1867 until the outbreak of the Franco-German War, in which he participated as a soldier, he studied hydraulic engineering at the ETH Zurich. After the war he finished his studies at RWTH Aachen.

From 1872 he worked for the Hamburg electricity and port construction administration, where he obtained the position of hydraulic engineering inspector. In 1895 he was appointed to the chair for hydraulic engineering of the late Julius Schlichting at the Technical University of Berlin . From 1898 to 1899 he was head of the civil engineering department. From 1901 to 1902 he was rector of the technical university.

In 1903 he was elected hydraulic engineering director by the Hamburg Senate, where he was responsible for the expansion of the Elbe and the Port of Hamburg. Bubendey was considered one of the greatest international authorities in power and port construction.
