Dieter Schumann (chemist)

Dieter Schumann (born August 12, 1935 in Meißen ) is a German organic chemist. Between 1993 and 1997 he was President of the TU Berlin .

Life

Schumann studied from 1953 to 1959 Chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig , where he met with a working "Synthesis of the 7- and 9-Hydroxysparteine" 1961 doctorate was. Then he went to the TU Berlin, where he worked for Ferdinand Bohlmann . He completed his habilitation in organic chemistry at the TU Berlin in 1970 and was appointed professor at the TU in the same year. Schumann was also active in university politics: from 1984 to 1987 he was 1st Vice President of the TU Berlin, from 1993 to 1997 he was President of the TU Berlin.

Scientifically, he dealt with the synthesis of natural substances and the application of mass spectrometry for structure elucidation. With Ferdinand Bohmann and Ekkehard Winterfeldt , among others , he published several papers on lupine alkaloids in the 1960s.

He retired in September 2000.
