Ekkehard Winterfeldt

Ekkehard Winterfeldt (born May 13, 1932 in Danzig ; † October 11, 2014 in Hanover ) was a German chemist and professor of organic chemistry .

life and work

At the end of the war, Winterfeldt's family came to Schleswig via Denmark . There he graduated from high school in 1952 at the cathedral school in Schleswig . In 1956 he presented the diploma at the Technical University of Braunschweig (now TU Braunschweig ab), 1958, he was at the Technical University Braunschweig in Ferdinand Bohlmann with a thesis on the synthesis of Hydroxysparteinen doctorate .

In 1959 Winterfeldt became a research assistant at the TU Berlin . 1962 followed the habilitation at the TU Berlin on naturally occurring thiophene derivatives . In 1967 he became an adjunct professor at the TU Berlin. In 1969 calls to Marburg , Berlin and Hanover followed. In 1970 Winterfeldt switched to a full professorship at the TU Hannover (now Leibniz University Hannover ). Here he was institute director and head of Department B for organic chemistry . In 1976 a call to Stuttgart followed , which he did not accept. From 1982 to 1986 Winterfeldt was a board member of the Medical Chemistry Section of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh), in 1983 he was elected a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society , and in 1984 he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . Since 1997 he was a member of the Academia Europaea .

Winterfeldt held numerous scientific and administrative offices: in 1986 he became President of the 22nd EUCHEM Conference on Stereochemistry - Bürgenstock. In 1992 he became chairman of the transition committee 09 (chemistry, pharmacy) at the Ministry of Culture of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , in 1994/1995 he was also a member of the Senate of the University of Hanover and in 1996 and 1997 President of the Society of German Chemists. Winterfeldt retired in 2000. He supervised around 200 diploma and doctoral students.

He dealt with alkaloid syntheses and he achieved several new total syntheses , such as the Cu (II) -catalyzed total synthesis of camptothecin , a quinoline alkaloid and cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agent against cancer.

Winterfeldt had been married since 1958.
