Walter Laas

Walter Laas (born February 7, 1870 in Berlin ; † October 16, 1951 in Biesenthal ) was a German engineer and founding member of the Shipbuilding Society .

Laas was born the son of the educator and philosopher Ernst Laas . After studying shipbuilding at TH Berlin , he worked for several shipyards, including Jos.L. Meyer, Papenburg, Joh. Tecklenborg AG, Geestemünde. From 1904 Walter Laas worked as a professor for practical shipbuilding at the TH Berlin. After the First World War he was involved in the reconstruction of the German fleet. From 1923 to 1925 he was rector at the TH Berlin. Since Laas joined the board of Germanischer Lloyd in 1926 , which he chaired from 1928–1931, he resigned his professorship at the TH Berlin. On behalf of the Government of the Weimar Republic he took in 1929 at the Ship Security Conference later and a year at the freeboard conference in London in part.

After Carl Busley's death in 1928, he became chairman of the Shipbuilding Society (STG), a position he held until 1931. After his retirement in 1935, he founded the STG technical committee “ History of German Shipbuilding ”, which still exists today and was chairman until his death in 1951. This activity was interrupted because he made his experience available to the Navy during World War II. After the end of the war he participated intensively in the reconstruction of the STG and in 1950 he became an honorary member of the STG.
