history

The name of the place was first recorded as Loddækøpingh in the middle of the 14th century. It also comes from the name of the river Lödde å (Kävlingeån) flowing south of the town and the old Danish name køping for trading center. Löddeköpinge was an important trading center of the Viking Age (800-1050 AD) and at that time already had a defensive wall in addition to a port. The place is near Borgeby or Lund on the Öresund , on the west coast of Skåne. Borgeby, on the other side of the river, is the location of a Viking castle . Köpingeorte (trading centers) are located in Laholm near Hälsingborg , Hököpinge, Dalköpinge near Trelleborg , Stora Köpinge near Ystad and Gärds Köping near Kristianstad .

In addition to the remains of Viking Age buildings on both sides of the river, archaeologists found ceramics and jewelry, which prove contacts with other places in Northern Europe. Simultaneous trading centers in Sweden were among others Birka and Sigtuna .
