Ernst Salomon Cyprian (born September 22, 1673 in Ostheim , † September 19, 1745 in Gotha ) was a German Lutheran theologian and librarian .

Life

The son of a pharmacist studied medicine in Jena and Leipzig . Then he dealt with theology. As a student of Johann Andreas Schmidt , he turned to studying church history . In 1699 Cyprian became an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Helmstedt , the following year professor of theology at the Collegium Casimirianum in Coburg and its director. In Wittenberg , Ernst Cyprian received his doctorate in theology in 1706 . In 1713 he became a member of the senior consistory in Gotha; 22 years later he became its vice-president. Together with his friend Valentin Ernst Löscher, Ernst Salomon Cyprian is one of the last important representatives of Lutheran orthodoxy . He was considered an opponent of Christoph Matthäus Pfaff . In addition, Cyprian was librarian at the Princely Library at Friedenstein Castle . In 1714 he published the Catalogus codicum manuscriptorum Bibliothecae Gothanae (catalog of the manuscripts in the Gothaschen library), an important source for book history , library history and educational history of Central Germany, especially Thuringia.

Since 1703 he was a foreign member of the then Royal Prussian Society of Sciences .
