Ernst Koch (born December 17, 1930 in Niederlangenau near Görlitz ) is a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Koch studied theology from 1949 to 1954 at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and at the University of Leipzig . In Leipzig he received his doctorate in 1960 on the subject of the theology of the Confessio Helvetica posterior under his doctoral supervisor Ernst Sommerlath . In 1959 he was ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia in Eisenach . From 1969 to 1976 he headed the seminary in Eisenach as rector . From 1976 he was a lecturer at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig with a focus on church history and philosophy, whose rector he was from 1982 to 1984.

In 1991 he completed his habilitation on studies on theology and piety in the late reformation and early orthodoxy at the church college in Naumburg . Since 2000 he has been an honorary professor at the theological faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . Until 2017 he taught as a guest lecturer at the Lutheran Theological University in Oberursel . In 2003 he received the Hermann Sasse Prize of the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELK). In 2005 the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis , Missouri honored him with an honorary doctorate . In addition, he has been honorary chairman of the Society for Thuringian Church History since 2001. V.

Ernst Koch is married to Anna-Margarethe Koch and has six daughters.

Koch initially dealt with Heinrich Bullinger in his work . In addition, he researched the theology and piety of Lutheranism and presented numerous essays on, for example, the reading habits of pastors, individual theologians (e.g. Johann Agricola ), the interpretation and effect of the Bible ( Song of Songs ) or Johann Sebastian Bach employ. In addition, he has an excellent knowledge of Thuringian church history. In 2000, his monograph on The Confessional Age - Catholicism, Lutheranism, Calvinism (1563–1675) was published in Leipzig .
