The Moritzburg state stud is the state stud of the states of Saxony and Thuringia . It is located in Moritzburg near Dresden . Together with the Graditz main stud , it forms the Saxon stud administration and has been a commercially oriented state enterprise since 2004.

The tasks of the state stud mainly include the provision of state stallions of the races Warmblood, Heavy Warmblood, Coldblood and Haflinger for the Free States of Saxony and Thuringia as well as the implementation of stallion and mare performance tests. The state college for riding and driving, which is integrated into the state stud, also offers courses. The stallion parades held annually in September, which first took place in 1924, are known nationwide.

history

The historic stud farm was built in 1733 by court architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann . After the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the Saxon King Anton of Saxony , known as the Kind, decided in 1828 to set up 38 stallions as state stallions in the Moritzburg hunting stables (royal decree of 23 January 1828). In 1830 further sires were added. From 1873 the Oldenburg was determined as a binding breeding goal. The breeding register was started in 1886 and regular mare and foal shows were held.

In order to meet the increased demand for draft horses due to the intensification of arable farming , draft horses of the Belgian-Brabant breeding direction were introduced after Norikern and Percherons and declared a binding breeding goal from 1911.

During the Second World War the breeding population declined sharply. After 1945 the stock of warm and cold blood stallions was continuously expanded again.

Stallion population

In the Moritzburg state stud, around 80 stallions of the races German sport horse , Saxon-Thuringian heavy warmblood , Rhenish-German draft horse and Haflinger are available. The covering station network includes 12 covering and insemination stations throughout Saxony and Thuringia. The most important breeding station in Thuringia is in Marlishausen . The German sport horse has been bred in Moritzburg instead of the Saxon warmblood since 2003 .
