The purpose of the professional association is to safeguard and promote the professional concerns and interests of all qualified and professionally active graphic and communication designers in Germany.

The BDG in the Third Reich

Like all professional associations of cultural workers, the BDG was integrated into the Reich Chamber of Culture during the National Socialist era .

In the journal Nutzgraphik from July 1933, OHW Hadank wrote about the 12th Federal Conference of the BDG on July 2, 1933:

“With this annual report, I would particularly like to point out the preparatory work of the Bundestag, which aimed to bring the federal government into line with the national survey in all of its organizational parts. This preparatory work was carried out by the old board in conjunction with our member Mr. Pfund, as a representative of the Kampfbund für Deutsche Kultur. "

At this 12th annual meeting of the BDG, the board members OHW Hadank, HK Frenzel, Egon Juda and Werner Beucke resigned from their posts after discharge. Under the eyes of the "guests of honor" present, Reich Commissioner Hans Hinkel , Biebrach from the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda and Böttcher for the Reich leadership of the Kampfbund for German Culture, Paul Pfund was elected chairman of the newly elected board. The BDG was thus affiliated to the Kampfbund für Deutsche Kultur. After the establishment of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts, the BDG was organizationally integrated into the Reich Chamber of Culture . The law on commercial advertising of November 1, 1933 stated that "the entire public and private advertising, display, exhibition, trade fair and advertising system is subject to the supervision of the Reich for the purpose of uniform and effective organization".

Lutz Hackenberg describes the further development during the time of National Socialism in BDG 1919–1969 , a special edition of the BDG-Mitteilungen on the 60th anniversary of the BDG: “On November 1, 1933, the Bund Deutscher Nutzgraphiker e. V. incorporated into the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts as a professional association for commercial graphics ( RGBl. I, page 797), the Reich Chamber of Culture Act with its implementation provisions was part of the statutes of the BDG. (...) The exercise of the profession was linked to membership in the Reich Chamber of Culture and thus only possible through the BDG (...) Up to March 1936, the BDG functioned as the 'official professional association of commercial graphic artists', after which there was only the' professional group the commercial artist 'in the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts.
