history
The first reliable mention of the Stralauer Dorfkirchhof dates back to 1412, making the burial place older than the village church built in 1464. The oldest surviving tomb, however, dates from 1795; it is the epitaph attached to the north wall of the church , which originally belonged to the local Lanz family homeowners. Until the incorporation Stralaus by large Berlin in 1920. The ensemble from the village cemetery, the village church and the 1912 built in the northwest corner of the cemetery formed Chapel with mortuary the center of the location.
In the mid-1920s, a square-shaped war memorial made of red brick was erected in the northern part of the cemetery, on three of four sides of which the names of the Stralau people who died in World War I are carved. During the Second World War , the village church was severely damaged, in particular a close bomb hit on February 26, 1945 caused the tower to be slightly inclined by around 5 degrees. In 1949 the church was restored and taken over by the Protestant parish, which has its administrative headquarters on Rudolfstrasse. Since then the cemetery has also been referred to as the Stralau Evangelical Cemetery .
In 1995 the cemetery along with the chapel and the war memorial were placed under monument protection. In 1997 it was renovated and expanded to include new urn burial grounds at its southwestern end. Today, the cemetery is primarily characterized by its idyllic landscape with an avenue lined with maple trees directly on the banks of the Spree. Besides the cemetery in Gatow it is currently the only former village cemetery in Berlin where funerals are still being carried out.
