Adelina Dmitrijewna Sotnikowa ( Russian Аделина Дмитриевна Сотникова ; born July 1, 1996 in Moscow ) is a Russian figure skater who starts in a single run . She is the Olympic champion of 2014 .

Career

Beginnings

Sotnikowa with Irina Tagajewa and Jelena Wodoresowa

Sotnikova started ice skating at the age of four. At the age of seven she started to train professionally at CSKA Moscow . A year later, Elena Vodoresova became her trainer. Her choreographers are Irina Tagajewa and Tatjana Tarasowa .

In 2009, the only 12-year-old Sotnikova became the Russian senior champion. Internationally, due to her young age, she was not even eligible to participate in junior competitions. She got problems with a growth spurt and was unable to defend her national title the following year. In the 2010/11 season Sotnikowa made her debut in international junior tournaments. She won her two Junior Grand Prix and also the Junior Grand Prix Final. She also became the Russian senior champion for the second time. In March 2011 Sotnikowa was Junior World Champion in Gangneung, South Korea . She won silver at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck .

Seniors

Sotnikowa was allowed to start for the first time in 2013 for world and European championships among seniors. At her first European Championship participation in 2013 in Zagreb , she won the silver medal behind the Italian series winner Carolina Kostner . In her first World Cup participation in 2013 in London , Canada , she was ninth. In 2014 she became Russian champion and runner-up European champion in Budapest behind her teammate Julija Lipnitskaja , whom she had defeated at the championship in her own country. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she became the first Russian woman ever to win gold in a single run. Your victory is controversial among experts. In addition to the South Korean sports department, figure skating experts such as Katarina Witt and Rudi Cerne also criticized the award of first place to Sotnikowa.

As of 2016, she no longer took part in any competitions and only ran shows. In March 2020, she finally announced the end of her career on Russian television.
