This very well-known Nocturne in A flat major is based on the song O lieb, as long as you can love (p. 298) on a text by Ferdinand Freiligrath. The structure of this piece of music can be broken down into three parts. Liszt combines the individual sections with virtuoso cadences . The opening melody appears again and again in the work, albeit in a varied form.

  • The first section up to the first cadence can be viewed as a prelude. The dynamics in the first part of the first section are clear and repetitively calm, which creates dreamy impressions. In the second part of the first section, the music appears excited by dissonances and rapid changes in tempo and dynamics.
  • The second section audibly represents the climax . Accents at the beginning of the bar underline the vigor. The volume, note values and the rhythm are more diverse than before. The pitch and volume reach their maximum here and thus contrast strongly with the rest of the game. Striking in the second section are triads - arpeggios and chords , especially octaves in the right hand , which promise great harmony.
  • The melody of the final section functions as a reminiscence of the beginning of the work. The music sounds thoughtful, plaintive, empty and dreary through high chords of the left hand, which is now playing crossed over the right hand. The music fades away due to the continuously diminishing dynamic. The last ten bars of this nocturn can be interpreted as a coda . A new motif with high, almost cheerful tones appears here. For a moment the hope for something new shimmers, but long, dark tones finish the piece.

The total playing time of Liebestraum Nr. 3 is approximately 4:50 minutes. This nocturne is given the addition poco allegro , con affetto at the beginning and sees itself as emotional and expressive. Love dream no. 3 is a frequently played piece of music. The interpreters of this piece include pianists such as Claudio Arrau , Evgeny Kissin , Lang Lang and Richard Clayderman .
