Accent (music)

An accent (borrowed from the Latin accentus ) in musical notation is a performance instruction that dynamically emphasizes or emphasizes the notes (certain melody tones, harmonically important chords) .

Examples of accents

The most common character for an accent is ( marcato - "accented" ), a type of shortened decrescendo fork. The "roof accent" designates a sharper emphasis ( accentuation ): ( martellato - "hammered" ). Both types of accents can also be written out above the notes or on the note head - often abbreviated as marc. or martel .

In addition, there are dynamic characters such as ( forzando / forzato = "reinforced") and ( sforzando / sforzato = "very emphasized") and or rinf. ( rinforzato ). However, these are usually only used for a few successive strokes.

The fortepiano , the instruction ( fortepiano = "strong and immediately quiet"), belongs to it as a dynamic extension (immediately quiet after a strong, loud sound is generated).

In the Viennese Classic , wedge-like symbols ( ) are also used above or below the notes, such as small accents, but the exact extent and execution of the accentuation required are rather unusual today. Due to historical performance practice, such symbols, which are now rather obsolete, have come back into focus and musical discourse.
