Timothy Richard Goebel (born September 10, 1980 in Evanston , Illinois ) is a retired American figure skater who started in a single run .
Life
Goebel was adopted as a child by Ginny and Rick Goebel through Catholic Charities . He started figure skating at the age of four. He was trained by Frank Carroll , Carol Heiss , Glyn Watts , Donna Dickinson and most recently Audrey Weisiger. Lori Nichol and Tatjana Tarasowa were responsible for his choreography . He was called "Quad King" because of his ability to stand many quadruple jumps. He is the first figure skater to show a quadruple salchow in an ISU competition (March 7, 1998 at the Junior Grand Prix Final). This makes him the first American to have made a four-fold jump in the competition. On October 31, 1999 at Skate America in Colorado Springs , he became the first figure skater to perform three quadruple jumps in a competition. At the 2002 World Cup , Goebel showed six quadruple jumps. In the same year he was the first figure skater to present the quadruple salchow in a combination at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City . He won the bronze medal behind Alexei Yagudin and Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko . In 2002 and 2003 he was runner-up in the world championship.
At the beginning of his career, Goebel was often criticized for concentrating too much on the jumps and thereby neglecting the choreography and presentation. But he was able to improve this later.
Since 2003 Goebel had to fight more and more injuries. In 2006 he tried to qualify for the Olympic Games one last time. Because of his injuries, he could no longer call up his jumping potential, finished seventh at the national championships and missed the qualification. He then resigned from active sports on April 25, 2006 and resumed his studies at Columbia University .
He works as a technical specialist at the Aviator Figure Skating Academy in New York .
