Kenneth Gene Shelley (born October 4, 1951 in Downey , California ) is a retired American figure skater who started in individual skating and pair skating .
As a single runner, he was American champion in 1972 . In the same year, after two eighth places at world championships , he achieved his best result with seventh place and celebrated his greatest success as an individual runner with fourth place at the Olympic Games in Sapporo .
As a pair skater alongside JoJo Starbuck , he also finished fourth at the Olympic Games in Sapporo . At the World Championships in 1971 and 1972 , the three-time US champions each won bronze behind the two Soviet couples Irina Rodnina and Alexei Ulanow and Lyudmila Smirnova and Andrei Suraikin . Shelley and Starbuck had already competed in the 1968 Olympics , making them the youngest athletes the United States had ever sent to the Olympics . As early as 1959, the two ran together in a show for the first time. In 1961 they began to train professionally with coach John Nicks .
In the summer of 1969, Shelley was injured when he fell through a glass door at a party. After the subsequent operation, he had to wear a cast for five weeks. After finishing their careers, Shelley and Starbuck toured with the ice revue Ice Capades.
