The United States took part in the 19th Winter Olympics in 2002 . 202 athletes, 115 men and 87 women, were sent to Salt Lake City to compete in 15 different disciplines. The United States was the third best nation with 10 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze medals.

The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was short track runner Amy Peterson .
