The United States took part in the VII Winter Olympics in 1956 in the Italian municipality of Cortina d'Ampezzo with a delegation of 67 athletes in all eight disciplines, including 57 men and 10 women. With two gold, three silver and two bronze medals, the United States was the sixth best nation in the Games. Hayes Alan Jenkins and Tenley Albright were each Olympic champions in figure skating.

As in 1952, the standard bearer at the opening ceremony was bobsleigh driver James Bickford .
