Betsy Snite
Betsy Snite Riley (born December 20, 1938 in Grand Rapids , Michigan , † June 15, 1984 ) was an American ski racer .
Snite was born to Al Snite, a professor at Dartmouth College , and grew up in Norwich, Vermont. She learned to ski from her father as a small child. Thanks to her talent, she was accepted into the renowned Ford Sayre funding program. At the age of 16, Snite competed in her first ski race in Europe.
In 1956 she qualified for the first time for the US Olympic team, but was then not used at the Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo . After winning the giant slalom of the SDS races in 1959 and the North American slalom championship title , she celebrated the greatest success of her career at the 1960 Winter Olympics . Three days after missing a medal in the giant slalom by just two tenths of a second, she finished second in the slalom behind Canadian Anne Heggtveit .
After her active career, Snite settled in Stowe and opened a sportswear shop there. In 1976 she was inducted into the US National Ski Hall of Fame in memory of her achievements .
