Gladys Werner

Gladys "Skeeter" Werner (born December 22, 1933 in Steamboat Springs , Colorado ; † July 20, 2001 there ) was an American ski racer .

Werner was the oldest of three siblings who achieved top results in alpine skiing. Like her brothers Buddy and Loris, she made the leap into the US national ski team.

When she made her debut in the US ski team in 1954, she was its youngest member. In 1956 she took part in the Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , where she was tenth in the downhill, 22nd in the giant slalom and 27th in the slalom. She ended her active sports career in 1957 and founded the Steamboat Ski School in her home town. In 1968 she married the former American football player Doak Walker , whom she had previously looked after in a ski course. She lived with him until her death. Werner succumbed to cancer in 2001.
