Steamboat Springs is a city in the US state of Colorado . The city lies at the foot of the Park Range , part of the Rocky Mountains , and is one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the United States.
history
The region around today's Steamboat Springs was originally settled by the Ute Indians who hunted in the valleys in the summer months. The first fur hunters ( trappers ) settled in the first decades of the 19th century , and the first cattle breeders soon followed. From 1879, the Ute Indians were forcibly relocated to a reservation in southern Utah by the American army .
Skiing was instrumental in the development of Steamboat Springs from an early stage . In 1913, the Norwegian Carl Howelsen had the first ski jump built and sponsored the so-called "Winter Carnival", an annual event that still includes ski races and jumping, sled dog rides and nightly light shows on Mount Werner and Howelsen Hill. The Steamboat Springs Ski Resort , whose realization was mainly driven by Jim Temple and John Fetcher , was founded in 1963. In 1970 a gondola lift to Mount Werner was built. It was the last plant worldwide to be commissioned according to the Bell / Wallmannsberger system .
