In 1989, Dunn won the Rocky Mountain Amateur Series halfpipe competition in Silver Creek . She made her international debut in 1990. Dunn won both 1993 and 1994 national championships. Dunn celebrated a total of seven wins in the Snowboard Continental Cup. In December 1997 she achieved her only World Cup victory in the Snowboard World Cup in Whistler, Canada .
At the X-Games , Dunn reached the podium four times. She won the gold medal in the halfpipe in 1997 and in the superpipe in 2001. After she also won silver in slopestyle, she even won the X-Games overall ranking in 2001. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , Dunn won the bronze medal behind Nicola Thost and Stine Brun Kjeldaas , making her the first US medalist in snowboarding. Four years later, she finished fifth at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Park City .
After the birth of their second son, Dunn-Downing announced the end of her career. In 2006 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Colorado Snowsports Museum. Dunn-Downing is a co-founder of the Boarding for Breast Cancer charity .
Personal
In 1999 Dunn married Dave Downing and has been called Shannon Dunn-Downing ever since. The couple have two sons (* 2003, * 2004).
