geology

11,000 to 15,000 years ago, a shield volcano formed in place of today's Mount Bachelor . It was only later, when the eruptions became more powerful, that today's stratovolcano emerged. Of the larger volcanoes in the Three Sisters area, it is the youngest. The mountain consists mainly of basalt and basaltic andesite .

No volcanic activity is currently observed, although that does not mean that the volcano is extinct. Fumaroles occur occasionally where the rock is porous and therefore air permeable. The last eruption took place 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. Less than 7,000 years ago, the massive eruption of Mount Mazama further south-southwest (see also: Crater Lake National Park ) occurred . The ash completely covered Mount Bachelor, 110 km away.

Surname

The term Bachelor (English for bachelor ) alludes to its location at a certain distance from the Three Sisters . Until the 1980s, the volcano was called Bachelor Butte . Long before that, his name was Brother Jonathan .

Specialty

The Mount Bachelor served in 1981 as a "double" for Mount St. Helens in the film drama Mount St. Helens - The Killer Volcano .
