Broken Top (English broken peak ) is a stratovolcano in the state of Oregon , USA . It is located 5 km southeast of the South Sister and about 32 km west of the town of Bend in Deschutes County .
geology
In the Pleistocene , a broad shield was originally basaltic andesite . Periodically, eruptions of magma richer in silicon dioxide , including andesite , dacite and rhyodacite, increased . The latter is a volcanic rock similar to both dacite and rhyolite . Dykes and deposits of pyroclastic currents can be found on the slopes of the volcano . Ice age glaciers caused severe erosion on the mountain, so that the crater can already be seen from outside the summit area.
