Mount Garibaldi is a 2,678 meter-high stratovolcano in the Coast Mountains in British Columbia .
The heavily weathered summit complex rises 40 miles north of Vancouver in Garibaldi Provincial Park . Mount Garibaldi is the largest volcano in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt , which belongs to the Cascade Volcanic Arc and, like Glacier Peak in the Cascade Range, consists entirely of Dacite . The mountain has a uniquely asymmetrical appearance because the main peak piled on top of a large glacier system that has now melted.
Mount Garibaldi has three peaks:
- the southern peak Atwell, a pyramidal peak, was the source of many pyroclastic flows during the volcanic development
- Dalton Dome, the northern summit is slightly higher than Atwell and came in the last eruptions of dacite
- Columnar Peak.
history
Mount Garibaldi was discovered in 1860 by British officer George Henry on the survey ship HMS Plumper while surveying the Howe Sound . Its captain named the mountain after the Italian freedom fighter Giuseppe Garibaldi . The mountain was first climbed in 1907 by a group of six Vancouver climbers. The view and the surrounding area led to regular mountaineering camps at Garibaldi Lake in summer , so that as early as 1920 the area was classified as a park reserve. In 1927, Garibaldi Provincial Park was established with a size of 195,000 hectares.
