St. Philip and James

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Philippus and Jakobus, which is listed as a monument, is in Ershausen , the core district of Schimberg in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . The parish of Ershausen with the branches of Bernterode and Martinfeld belongs to the dean's office in Dingelstädt in the diocese of Erfurt .

history

The first church in the village is mentioned in a document as early as 1272. It was consecrated to St. Walburga and probably existed until around 1688, because a contract for the construction of a new church is documented from that year. There were other previous buildings. Around 1905, the first plans were made to replace the previous building with a new one. The reason for this was the poor structural condition of the church building, which led to its demolition in 1907 . After a long planning period, today's church was built between 1908 and 1911 and consecrated in 1912. The new church was dedicated to the apostles Philip and James . To date, various maintenance measures have been carried out in the church and on the outside areas, and the church furnishings have also been renewed.

Building description

The three-aisled basilica was built according to a design by Paschalis Gratze in 1908-10 in place of a previous building from 1564. The rectangular, stone-facing nave , which is provided with a slate-covered gable roof , has a flush church tower in the west and a polygonal end of the choir . The side aisles are drawn over half the depth of the side fronts of the tower. The dome of the tower is covered with a standing seam roof. Since 2009 there has been a new bell that replaces the old steel bells . The three-axis wall structure is structured by arched windows and pilaster strips . There are buttresses at the choir and the aisles . The interior is spanned by a vault . The belt arches are supported by pilaster strips, which are provided with a cranked cornice .

Furnishing

The high altar with the crucifixion group and statues of Philip and James from 1731 is still preserved from the previous buildings. The baptismal font above an eight-sided pedestal and the cup are from 1575. A stone from the pointed arched portal with the inscription 1564 is in the church. It was built into a pillar near the church and discovered there by chance. The cheeks of the pews are from the 18th century. The tabernacle and canteen were renewed in 1908. The pulpit in forms of Renaissance dates from the 16th century. Statues of Boniface , Philip, James and Christ Salvator stand in round niches decorated with fittings between columns . The organ with 21 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal , was made around 1900 by an unknown organ builder.
