Kris Freeman (born October 14, 1980 in Concord , New Hampshire ) is an American cross-country skier .

Career

Freeman, who competes for the Andover Outing Club , made his international debut in January 1998 at the Junior World Championship in Pontresina with 49th place over 10 km in free style and 27th place over 30 km in classic style. A little later he ran the first international FIS races in his home country and later also in the Cross-Country Continental Cup . Freeman finished fifth in his first use in an FIS race over 10 kilometers on Mount Bachelor . The 1999 Junior World Championships in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer did not produce any results worth mentioning. At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, the US-American achieved a podium finish in a 15-kilometer race as part of the Continental Cup in Vernon for the first time in the same position as runner-up . The Junior World Championship 2000 in Štrbské Pleso brought the first good results in this context. Over 10 kilometers he finished 17th, in the sprint eighth and over 30 kilometers he finished 21st.

A year later Freeman was able to achieve the runner-up title behind Justin Wadsworth over 10 kilometers at the US championships in McCall . Just one week later he made his debut in the Cross-Country World Cup in Soldier Hollow over 15 kilometers , finished 29th and won his first World Cup points straight away. He then won a sprint race in the Continental Cup in Marquette . The highlight of this first successful season was the 2001 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . Freeman reached in Finland however no placement better than 50th place. A year later Freeman entered in Salt Lake City in four races at the Olympic Winter Games . He finished 22nd over the 15 km before finishing 14th in the subsequent pursuit. He also finished 41st in the sprint and was fifth in the relay race together with John Bauer , Justin Wadsworth and Carl Swenson .

From the 2002/03 season Freeman was a permanent member of the US squad in the World Cup, but also competed in races in the Continental Cup. In January 2003 he achieved a first very good World Cup result with Carl Swenson in Oberhof as fourth in the team sprint. He was particularly strong at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme . If he was only 12th with the US relay, he was able to run to 14th place in the pursuit race and missed a medal by just 0.61 seconds as fourth in the race over 15 kilometers in classic style.

At the end of 2003, Freeman came sixth over 30 kilometers in Toblach for the first time among the top ten in the World Cup. The 2005 Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf were not very successful . In 2006 he won the Pursuit title at the US Championships in Soldier Hollow , having previously been runner-up in the 15-kilometer classic behind Ivan Babikov . Several weeks later , Freeman entered the Olympics for the second time. In the Pragelato Plan competitions he achieved an acceptable 21st place over 15 kilometers, but was only 61 over 50 kilometers.

In 2007 Freeman was winner of the US Championships in Houghton over 19 and 15 kilometers and missed another medal as fifth in the sprint competition. The highlight of the season was the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . It was Freeman's fourth world championships. The American's performance fluctuated a lot in Japan and ranged from 62nd place in the 15-kilometer freestyle race to 12th place in the 50-kilometer classic. Again Freeman's preference for the classic track was evident.

The following season brought in fifth place over 15 kilometers in Kuusamo the setting of his hitherto best position and thus the best result since 2003. At the national US championships in 2008 in Houghton and Fairbanks , Freeman was only able to achieve third place over 10 kilometers as his best result to reach. In the 2008/09 season , Freeman posted several results among the top 20 in the World Cup.

Freeman caused a surprise at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 when he missed the bronze medal by 1.3 seconds over 15 kilometers. In the team sprint, he finished eleventh with Torin Koos and 13th with the relay. Also in the 2009/10 season Freeman managed to shorten his connection to the top of the world. In Kuusamo, Finland, he again fought for fourth place over 15 kilometers classic. In Davos he finished seventh in free technique over the same distance.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Freeman ran only on a very weak 59th place over the 15 km distance. In the skiathlon, too, he did not get above rank 45. In the final 50 km run, he even had to stop prematurely. In the following season 2010/11 Freeman started with a win and a second place at FIS races in Muonio . At the first World Cup of the season in Gällivare , Sweden , he was ninth among the top ten. He rarely achieved this result during the season. He finished the Tour de Ski 2010/11 after finishing seventh on the last stage in 28th place overall. At the 2011 World Championships in Oslo , Norway , he missed his return to the top of the world. Contrary to the good performance in 2009, this time he had to be content with mixed performances. In the sprint he was eliminated as 58th in the preliminary races. After two top 30 placements in the individual and the pursuit, a disappointing 14th place for the team in the relay race followed. At the end of the season Freeman traveled to Sun Valley and contested some races of the US Super Tour there after winning the US championship over 50 km. He finished second in the first 3.5 km race and won the 15 km race. He also came second in the 6 km pursuit.

With the 2011/12 season , Freeman's performance curve continued downwards. After finishing well outside of the points in the first World Cups and also finishing the Tour de Ski 2011/12 only in 43rd place in the overall standings, the American only managed to make it into the World Cup points again in mid-January in Otepää, Estonia, in 22nd place . At the US championships held a little later in Bad Ischl , Austria , he managed to win another title. He also clearly won the 50 km mass start in Craftsbury , having previously celebrated two victories in the US Super Tour at the same location.

After he did not achieve good results the following year either in the World Cup or at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 , he remained without a title at the US Championships in 2014 for the first time in a long time. He only won two bronze medals in the sprint and over 15 km in Soldier Hollow. At the following Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 , Freeman's fourth Olympic Games, he stayed in the individual disciplines beyond the top 50 and was also not given a starting place in the relay. In the 2014/15 season he won five races of the US Super Tour and thus took first place in the overall cup standings. At the Nor-Am-Cup he got three wins and reached fifth place in the overall standings. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 2015 , he achieved 59th place in the 15 km freestyle and 48th place in the skiathlon. After finishing 73rd at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he made it onto the podium three times at the US Super Tour, including one win and third place overall.
