Amy Eileen Peterson (born November 29, 1971 in Maplewood , Minnesota ) is a former American short track runner and Olympic medalist.

Amy Peterson began her athletic career as a figure skater. She later switched to speed skating. Between the demonstration competitions at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary and the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , she took part in five Winter Olympic Games. The greatest successes were winning the silver medal with the 1992 relay in Albertville and twice winning a bronze medal at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer over 500 meters and with the relay. In 1998 she won the trials and just barely missed another medal in fourth over 1000 meters. Petersen's career was made more difficult before the 1998 Games by the chronic fatigue syndrome from which she suffered.

Petersen was American all-around champion nine times, from 1993 to 1996, and from 1998 to 2002. Last but not least, she benefited from Cathie Turner's absence during the non-Olympic phases. She studied at Concordia University , where she graduated magna cum laude . Peterson started for the clubs Midway Speedskating Club and Saratoga Springs Winter Club . She was trained by Pat Maxwell and previously by Andy Gabel, who said Peterson was a role model. After the games in 2002, she ended her career and became a coach in the US federation.
