Ernst Wilhelm Hildebrand (1855)

Ernst Wilhelm Hildebrand (born March 8, 1833 in Falkenberg ; † November 17, 1924 in Berlin ) was a German history and portrait painter.

Life

Hildebrand was the eldest son of the Falkenberg manor owner and later Sorau station master Carl Hildebrand and his wife Emma, née Lemm. He was a student of Carl Steffeck in Berlin, where, apart from a one-year stay in Paris, he also worked afterwards. On November 10, 1875 he was appointed to the art school in Karlsruhe and on October 10, 1876 he was appointed professor of figure painting. He became a teacher for genre, history and portrait painting. Among his students there were Carl Röchling , Friedrich Kallmorgen and Pedro Weingärtner . At the suggestion of Anton von Werner , Hildebrand was appointed to succeed Carl Gussow at the Art Academy in Berlin in 1880 . However, he gave up teaching in Berlin in 1885 for health reasons. However, he remained a member of the Academy and was repeatedly elected Senator.

Hildebrand initially devoted himself exclusively to decorative painting, but then turned to genre painting , which mainly dealt with the figures of Luther and Queen Louise . In the nineties he put the emphasis on portrait painting . In these years, his pictures were characterized by effective coloring , in keeping with the taste of the times , but in some cases slipped into a routine salon art.

Hildebrand also worked for the court circles and painted, among others, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Baden as well as the German Crown Prince Friedrich III and his family. With a Tullia , which her team drives over the corpse of her father, he dared an attempt in the field of history painting in 1886 . In addition to pictures for literary works, such as a depiction of Gretchen in dungeon , he also created portraits of professors of his time, such as a portrait of the astronomer Arthur Auwers . His portrait of Karl August Möbius from 1895 is in the possession of the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Ernst Hildebrand's brother Max (1839–1910) was a precision mechanic and manufacturer of optical devices.
