Otto Hamel

Otto Hamel (born Otto August Maximilian Hammel ) (born March 6, 1866 in Erfurt ; † July 23, 1950 in Lohr am Main ) was a German painter .

Life

Otto Hamel was born in Erfurt as the son of a decorative painter. After finishing school, he attended the Royal Erfurt Art School, where he studied with the history painter Eduard von Hagen and with Hans Semper . With a scholarship from the city of Erfurt, he continued his studies in Berlin with Max Koch and Franz Skarbina . In 1888 he received a state scholarship to study in Italy, and one year later he opened his first studio in Berlin. He continued his studies in Paris, where he came into contact with Impressionism . In 1890, after his return, he was appointed professor of decorative painting at the Hanover School of Applied Arts .

Exhibitions

  • On his 75th birthday, a special exhibition was organized on his works, for which the H. Menges Gallery in Hanover published a publication.

Numerous multicolored postcards , so-called “artist postcards ”, with views of Hanover with Otto Hamel's signature, from publishers such as Meißner & Buch , Leipzig , among others .
