Rusty Smith

Rusty Smith (born August 27, 1979 in Sunset Beach , California ) is an American short track runner.

Rusty Smith was named after the baseball star Rusty Staub and started figure skating together with his mother in 1992 , but switched to the short track shortly afterwards . He has been a member of the US national team since 1995 and trains in Colorado Springs . He was trained initially by Susan Ellis and Wilma Boomstra and currently by Li Yan . It starts on routes from 500 to 5000 meters. He took part in the Winter Olympics three times, in 1998 , 2002 and 2006 . In 2002 he won the bronze medal in the 500-meter course in Salt Lake City behind Marc Gagnon and Jonathan Guilmette .

In 1998 Smith was the first American all-around champion, in 2000 over the 3000-meter distance. At the Goodwill Games in 2000, he was third in the 500-meter distance. The greatest success was winning the gold medal at the 2001 World Championships in Calgary over 5000 meters with the team in record time. At the all-around world championships in 2001 he finished eighth. In 2002 he won bronze over 1500 meters at the individual distance world championships and was fifth in the all-around world championships.
