Alexandra "Alex" Wubbels (born January 23, 1976 in Aspen , Colorado ) is an American nurse and former alpine skier who competed at the 1998 Winter Olympics and 2002 Winter Olympics under her maiden name Alexandra Shaffer .

Life

Career

She competed in the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1999 , and finished 15th in slalom and 27th in giant slalom . In the combination she came in the top ten in the 1998 Winter Olympics with 9th place. She also took part in the 2002 Winter Olympics, and finished 28th in the giant slalom. She won several US medals in 1999, including gold in giant slalom and slalom. In 2004 she ended her career as an athlete.

Private life

In June 2014 she married the winter sportsman Cory Wubbels. In December 2014 they had their first child.

Blood draw incident

On July 26, 2017, Alex Wubbels was temporarily arrested while serving as a senior nurse at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City . The incident was recorded through the body cams of the police officers present. The police officer who made the arrest, Det. Jeff Payne of the Salt Lake City Police Department , requested a blood sample from an unconscious patient. Wubbels adhered to the regulations of the university clinic , according to which blood sampling is only permitted from unconscious patients if there is a court order, or if the patient had previously consented to the blood sampling, or if the patient is arrested. Neither of these conditions applied. Because of this, she refused to allow the police officer to draw her blood, and the police handcuffed her. Then he took her to his company car, sat her in the passenger seat, and buckled her seat belt. Wubbels was released shortly thereafter without charge.

The incident became public on August 31, 2017, when Wubbels held a press conference with her lawyer, at which she gave, among other things, her reasons for the publication of the recordings. On September 1, 2017, Mayor Jackie Biskupski and Police Chief Mike Brown held a press conference and issued a joint press release. Wubbels accepted the official apologies. On September 4, 2017, the University of Utah Hospital held its own press conference.

Payne was released on October 10, 2017.
