Joseph William ("Joey") Cheek (born June 22, 1979 in Greensboro , North Carolina ) is a retired American speed skater .

At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he won the gold medal over 500 meters and the silver medal over 1000 meters. Four years earlier, he had already won bronze over 1000 meters at the winter games in his own country.

Cheek switched to the ice as a successful inline skater at the age of 15 and took part in Junior World Championships three times (1996/1997/1998). From 1999 to 2006 he lived in Park City , Utah , where he trained with the American team.

Cheek also received recognition for his charitable behavior after winning the gold medal in Turin, when he donated his prize money to the Olympic Games of the Johan-Olav-Koss Foundation " Right To Play ". As a result, a large number of athletes did the same, so that more than $ 300,000 in donations were collected.

Cheek retired in 2006.

Due to his involvement in the Darfur team , Cheek's entry permit for visiting the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was withdrawn.
